A rich, creamy shot of espresso is just a switch away with the handsome Krups Espremio. With its Thermobloc technology and 8 bars of pressure, this machine makes especially hot espresso, and quickly. A single function knob makes operation simple. Larger than most, the 27-ounce (0.8-liter) plastic water tank lifts out the top for easy filling, or can even be filled during operation, and provides enough water for constant steaming. Ground coffee is measured and tamped into the shallow metal filter with the provided plastic spoon. While the machine makes only one cup of espresso at a time, the used grounds can be quickly emptied (a latch keeps the metal filter attached to the arm) and refilled for the next cup. For cappuccinos and lattes, milk froths up by means of the steam nozzle that swings out or in, accomodating the vessel size. A thumping noise made by the steam pump may seem a bit disconcerting at first, but is normal. The stainless-steel cup tray and plastic drip pan remove easily for clean-up. This machine brews espresso and then froths milk for cappuccinos and café lattés directly from a container of milk--no pitcher needed. Two filter holders accompany the machine, one for ground coffee (with filters for one or two cups) and one for one-cup coffee pods from companies such as Illy and Starbucks. (Eighteen Illy pods are included.) A frothing attachment fits onto the machine's steam nozzle and permits selecting either steamed milk or froth, with milk being drawn into the attachment through a flexible tube immersed in a container of milk. The attachment also has a setting so it can be rinsed out with hot water, and it disassembles for periodic cleaning and then is easily reassembled. An indicator light goes out when proper water temperatures have been reached for brewing or frothing/steaming.

On the front of the machine is a selector for choosing brewing, frothing, or steaming, with the latter suitable not only for milk but also for hot chocolate, tea, and soup. On top of the machine is a warming tray for cups, and beneath the brewing head is a removable drip tray. The 37-ounce water tank can be lifted out for convenient filling. The machine is clad in matte-black plastic for easy cleanup, measures a compact 8-1/4 inches wide, 11 inches high, and 10 inches deep, and carries a one-year warranty against defects. --Fred Brack
